[Applause] [Music] [Applause] hey welcome It’s Brian and this is Guitar Solo Reactions Today we have the incredible Frank Zappa and his band live in 1981 for one of his famous Halloween shows in New York This is the song Alien Orifice and I think there’s a killer guitar solo in it or there should be So we’re going to do this one for fun This is kind of my least favorite period of Frank’s music Uh 81ish you know Um some of the records you are what you is Joe’s Garage all really great But after that I kind of get lost till basically uh 86 or so and kind of come back in Not that I didn’t like the band or Frank at that time I actually saw him in 88 So I was listening to them when these records were coming out uh real time and I was a huge fan But in retrospect I’m definitely more of a late 60s to like 75 and then uh like I said 86 and beyond uh as far as his bands and music in general So here we go with all that Z alien orifice [Music] [Applause] [Music] Bobby Martin Heat Heat [Music] [Applause] [Music] Heat Heat [Music] Now this has been documented many times but that incredibly kind of all upstrokes and then these kind of rakes that he because it’s really really unique and uh you know that approach is just really cool and it’s always great to see his hand really up close and he’s playing right at basically the base of the neck and so just all sorts of kind of cool articulation things in there that are really cool and obviously Frank’s so [Music] Heat Hey Heat [Music] Yeah [Music] Heat Heat [Music] Yeah [Music] Jesus Christ man [Music] Hey [Music] Nice Well there we have it Frank and his 81 band doing Alien Orifice We have Chad Wackman Bobby Martin Tommy Mars Steve Vi Scott Tunes Ed Man and uh is that it i can’t remember I think that’s everybody Um but that was really cool to hear For the first time in a while the undercurrent of um harmony under Frank’s solo was really cool And it shifted quite a few times I mean in most of his solos it’s like a two chord vamp and maybe they rhythmically change but the harmonic structure kind of stays the same But this is one of those songs that I’ve seen a few videos uh by certain YouTube channels where they really go deep and analyze the out of it and it’s way beyond me comprehensionwise what they’re talking about just from a music theory standpoint But man that is such a cool song and uh such amazing players Like I said the 81 band wasn’t my favorite Just I think it’s some of the dated I think it might be more after this band after after Tommy Mars isn’t in the band and they just had more kind of uh digital more DX7 kind of keyboard sounds and some of the keyboards during this period I guess is what I’m getting at just bugged the out of me not playingwise but just sonically it growing up around that time where those sounds were prevalent in lots of music it just sometimes just really irritated me Now this piece is I iconic piece and basically a you know one of those pieces that no one in rock music ever even got close to So anyway I’m a huge Frank fan Love his guitar playing love his music love weasel and everything he does to keep it alive and his playing Very unlike his dad’s obviously not the same person but um a huge lifelong Frank fan for sure Anyway I’m Brian See you soon
