Eric Gales – Retribution (guitar lesson)

[Music] heat heat [Music] [Applause] today looking at Retribution title track from uh Eric Gales this is one of his older ones and it’s more a rock song right rather than a than a blues so we’re going to talk quickly guitar tone tuning and we’ll look at the three main rhythm guitar parts just going to look at the rhythm guitar parts today all right tone-wise this sounds to me like a Strat single coil on the bridge pickup and ampwise or amp pedal-wise it sounds like he’s got a distortion pedal rather than straight amp and an overdrive pedal um it’s just kind of got that colored sound so I went with an amp that was sort of more on the cleaner sound and I used a distortion pedal um a little bit of scooped mids to get it into that you [Music] [Applause] know I put a tiny bit of reverb on there you can’t hear too much where there’s reverb but I just like reverb tried some spring today which is a little different anyway reverb is optional beyond that I wouldn’t be having um delay or anything like that tuning wise we’re down a half steps or in E flat uh but from there it’s drop D um this guitar’s in standard tuning so when uh when I was sort of learning it um I just I transposed it up a semmit tone rather than tuning this down it was just sort of easier that way so if you want to play with the original you drop D in E flat uh on this one though me today I’m in standard tuning drop D okay so that intro riff so [Music] [Applause] [Music] great it’s really really good so he’s heavily leaning into open strings and it’s a funny one because you know how he’s got a right-handed guitar but he plays it left hand so the the bass strings are on on you know down here and the the treble strings are up here sometimes when I’m learning an Eric Gale song I just think how would his how would the fingering work there but anyway um okay there’s some tab links below if you’re interested in there it’s just a three three rifts today so the first one just kind of one of those you know down uh up around the 19th fret all right and now here is the uh intro riff nice and [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] slow okay so the main riff really is sliding into that fifth fret so two open uh D strings I suppose that bottom string sliding into the fifth fret then hitting the open D and then the third fret on the A string back up to that open D in the very first time he does it in the intro you can hear instead of just that open D he’s kind of hitting the open D and open A at the same time whether it was an accident or not um so he does that so I I left it tab that way kind of the first one or two in each cycle uh of the riff so again nice and [Music] [Applause] slow okay that last [Applause] part okay open D open A third fret on the A back up to open D that’s kind of the trickiest thing I suppose you’ve got to um be quite controlled with your with your right hand there because of the open strings the amount of distortion that you’re playing okay there’s one extra thing in that intro the very first time he does it he brings in the third fret on the bottom string um but he doesn’t do it any other time in the song that I can hear and what I mean is this [Music] [Applause] [Music] that part doesn’t do it any other time the rest of it it’s always uh just the A string okay so keep an eye out on that moving into the verse it’s really just sort of the band just lays lays down a little bit [Music] [Applause] right okay that kind of idea there so it’s uh starts the same two open D’s palm muted sliding into the fifth fret open D and then stopping on that third fret that C note but then as soon as he hits it he hits it again as a mute right just that first time second time okay 2 32 again there are tabs tabs linked down below and I find that tricky to play fast that mute in there on the third string it’s it’s an upstroke for me when you’re doing alternate picking but it’s just kind of tricky to play [Music] [Applause] all right that sort of thing uh moving to the chorus [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right that kind of idea so because we’re in job D you’re doing the two finger power chords starting on that uh third fret and you can fret it with two fingers like this i do it that way sort of instead of that way because you hear the open G string it’s really hard to hear the rhythm um that he’s doing the sort of a lot going on in the mix um but the first part is like a [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Okay so third fret power chord fifth fret power chord and then uh open the two finger variety there palm [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] muted hit the A and then a pulloff [Music] A okay again tabs uh tabs below coming kind of last time in that chorus we’re going to hit the three five one two three five then back to the main [Applause] [Music] [Applause] riff all right retribution from Eric Gale great song more on the rocky side good luck
