The Gibson SG and Gibson Les Paul are two of the most iconic electric guitars of all time! You’ve seen these guitars played by Jimmy Page, Slash, Angus Young… basically every rock guitar legend ever. Obviously, both guitars rock and sound phenomenal, but how different are they? To be honest, I’ve had my SG since high school and I RARELY play it. It’s pretty much been sitting in its case in a closet since 2017 because I think the Les Paul sounds, plays, and feels better. Also, if we put our biases aside, I think the SG and Les Paul sound pretty similar, so to me, I’d just rather play a Les Paul. Today we’re going to find out if I’ve been wrong about the SG all these years. So here we go, is a Gibson SG is worth buying if you already have a Les Paul?
Obviously the guitars are different weights, have different looks, different neck profiles, and have different pickups, but today I want to focus on which guitar provides the most versatile sound, and just the overall best sound. To do so, I’m putting these two guitars up against each other in a rock n’ roll test, loungey jazz vibes test, and finally, a country test. All FX and settings will remain the same for each demo, the only difference is the guitar.
While this won’t be true for every Les Paul, what shocked me throughout the tests was that the Les Paul was a consistently brighter guitar with the Burstbucker Pro pickups. No matter the neck position or genre, the Les Paul brought excellent attack, clarity of notes, and overall voicing. Clean or dirty, the Les Paul sparkles. To my surprise, the SG did sound similar to the Les Paul, but with an overall DARKER tone. I was almost 100% certain that the SG would be the brighter and thinner sounding guitar. I still can’t believe it. As you’ll hear in the demos, the low end warmth and smooth high end of the SG is incredibly pleasing. It adds a vintage flair, almost as if I was playing an old guitar through an old amp.
SO, is a Gibson SG worth buying if you already have a Les Paul? I’m not sure… The tone is different, but I’m not sure it’s so different that you need to have both. What do you think?
