The Cream Track Eric Clapton Isn't Fond Of (Yet It Catapulted His Fame)]

Did Eric Clapton ever really know what Cream was? He formed the band with bass guitarist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker in 1966, after seeing his hero Buddy Guy perform with a trio in London. Convinced his future lay in a blues-rock trio, he quit John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers to make a fresh start.

What he failed to consider was that Bruce and Baker both had strong jazz backgrounds. For them, Cream was nothing less than a jazz-rock fusion outfit, one of the first in an era that would include artists like the Free Spirits (featuring guitarist Larry Coryell), Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, and Clapton’s old pal Jeff Beck, to name a few.
