Tony Macalpine : M.A.R.S. – ' I can see it in your eyes ' RHYTHM & lyrics (in description)

Tony MacAlpine

NOW IT’S TIME YOU REALIZE….that 80s Tony Macalpine was the best guitarist in the world…!!!

I love this song so much I just had to do the whole track instead of my regular condensed version. This also means by now I’ve recorded the whole song including the solos (= see Macalpine playlist) except for that end solo….my favourite solo of all time (and I’m afraid also one of Tony’s most difficult) !!

And although at first sight this seems like your regular run of the mill metal rhythm playing Tony manages to weave in some intricate harmonies as well as a few very clever compositional ideas.

– 0:02 : Tony loves playing over the Im to bVI (or reverse) chord progression (aka “the Journey bass”:) so he does in the intro and the mid song break but also during his main solo.

– 0:45 : the verses start out in A Mixolydian (Asus4-A + A7sus4-G/A) ending with a gnarly G7/A chord (@0.57) = a modal interchange chord borrowed from A Aeolian.

– 0:59 : the first two chords of the bridge (F and Dm) at first seem to acknowledge this move to A Aeolian but the the Bb chord reveals we’ve actually modulated to D natural minor !

And the aural deceivement doesn’t end there when – after the Bb and C chords (played with the 1st finger barred over the 6th string for added reinforcement) – Tony resolves to D major as the last chord of the bridge!

– 1:13 : that last D chord then acts as a pivot chord in this harmonic labyrinth because it actually announces the modulation to Em in the chorus….phew!!

Not so much a regular metal song now, is it…!?

Off course I cannot leave you guys without quoting Rob Rock’s heartfelt lyrics for you to belt along to so here goes:

I can see it in your eyes
————————————-

Burning hot in the night
Feel your body next to me

Something’s gone in your touch
Did you take it to the streets

I feel you comin’ on
Tryin’ to bring me to my knees
I won’t let you bring me down again

I can see it in your eyes
Now it’s time you realize

I can see it in your eyes
You can’t hide behind your lies

Evil heart lose control
Words are written in the wind

Take you down stranglehold
You will answer to your sin

Your time has finally come
There is no place you can run
What you say won’t change my point of view

I can see it in your eyes
Now it’s time you realize

I can see it in your eyes
You can’t hide behind your lies
Oh no

I can see it in your eyes
You can’t hide behind those lies

There’s no place to run and hide
You lied….why

I can see it in your eyes
Now it’s time you realize

I can see it in your eyes
You can’t hide behind your lies

I can see it in your eyes
Now it’s time you realize

I can see it in your eyes
What you say won’t change my mind

I see it in your eyes
Oh, yeah

I can see it in your eyes

Painstakingly sorted out and transcribed by yours truly.
You’re welcome.

Shred ruleZ,
Pete.
