Title: “Cortez the Killer” – Grace Potter, Joe Satriani, Willy Waldman

A supergroup performing live at the 6th Annual Jammys awards in NYC in 2007:

Grace Potter (Grace Potter and The Nocturnals) – keyboards and vocals
Joe Satriani – lead guitar
Willie Waldman – trumpet
Steve Kimock (Steve Kimock Band) – guitar
Reed Mathis (Steve Kimock Band) – bass guitar
Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction) – drums

“Cortez the Killer”, written by Neil Young

Grace Potter, Joe Satriani, Steve Kimock, Reed Mathis, Willy Waldman and Stephen Perkins cover Cortez the Killer at the Jammy’s.

There are a few versions out there. However, I think this live version captures the energy and emotion of the original song, and maybe liked by those of us who enjoy the raw, unpolished sound of Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

Althouh there is the great live performance by the Dave Matthews Band with Warren Haynes at their Central Park concert in 2003.

“Cortez the Killer” is a song by Canadian-American singer-songwriter Neil Young from his 1975 album, Zuma. It was recorded with the band Crazy Horse. It has since been ranked No. 39 on Guitar World’s 100 Greatest Guitar Solos

Neil Young is one of the all-time greats when it comes to the art of songwriting. One of his greatest accomplishments, however, is without a doubt the 1975 album Zuma.

Lyrics
He came dancing across the water
With his galleons and guns
Looking for the new world
And the palace in the sun
On the shore lay Montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls, he often wandered
With the secrets of the world
And his subjects gathered ‘round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see
And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on
Hate was just a legend
And war was never known
The people worked together
And they lifted many stones
And they carried them to the flat lands
But they died along the way
And they build up with their bare hands
What we still can’t do today
And I know she’s living there
And she loves me to this day
I still can’t remember when
Or how I lost my way
He came dancing across the water
Cortez, Cortez
What a killer
