I’m back, and I’m bald, I mean bad! Here is a cover you never knew you needed, but want less than a crack, sack and back wax.
Not that I can play much of his catalogue, Greg Howe has had an immense impact on my playing and helping me formulate my own voice on guitar. He was the reason I started exploring hybrid picking, four note per string scales, tapping legato runs, tapped arpeggios and the list goes on. This song for me epitomises Greg at his best both musically and technically. As for the tone, well, most Howe fans will agree that his ‘introspection” era tone was his holy grail tone. It’s been virtually impossible for anyone, ever, to recreate it. Greg has been somewhat vague over the years about how he achieved this tone. I dont think he was being intentionally secretive, but I suspect that a lot was going on. Too much for him to remember. Especially when it comes to all the studio processing that went on. Now, I won’t say that I absolutely nailed it, but it’s the closest I’ve been in the 10 years since I learnt it. Needless to say, it’s not all with the spark alone, as usual, I had some help by way of a Carl Martin lick box (Greg’s signature preamp pedal) and an Xotic Sould Driven pedal. A bit of EQing in garageband, a little implementation of the Haas effect (a basic track doubling effect with a 7ms delay) and a tad compression. E voila! I plan on doing a massive tone build video for this and going through the recording process and techniques used. Also a series of videos breaking down every single phrase of this fusion beast. So keep your eyes peeled on my yt channel “Papalytic”. If you’re a fusion fan you won’t want to miss this. For the time being here’s….
Jump start – Greg Howe (Introspection) released September 1993
