ERIC JOHNSON STYLE, CHORDS, MELODY AND SOILS

Eric Johnson

In today's video, we dive into Eric Johnson's unmistakable style! This is free improvisation, incorporating his timbre, chord melody style, solo and rhythm in a way that captures the essence of his unique sound. I'm using a 1965 Fender Stratocaster with Pure Vintage 65 pickups, a Boss FZ-5 fuzz in Fuzz Face mode, a Marshall JCM800 and a Tape Delay to create this sonic atmosphere. To achieve this characteristic sound, the first step is to master music theory for his style. Eric is a true student of the electric guitar, and understanding the major scale, the modes, modulation and modal borrowing is essential to playing or composing in this style. The second part involves rhythm and accentuation — his “feeling” is very characteristic and challenging to reproduce. And finally, the technical part: Eric is a clean guitarist, and ensures that every note played is heard clearly. The tone is not that difficult to achieve; you just need a clean, sturdy base, whether valve or digital, as long as it maintains clarity. I use my Marshall's gain on top, as well as the fuzz, controlling the amount of distortion with the knobs, volume and tone buttons. Many don't realize that guitar controls are the most powerful pedals — mastering them can lead to any sound you imagine. Eric Johnson is my mentor and teacher; I owe my entire musical career and achievements to him. I hope this video (as well as this description) inspires you and helps many guitarists. We shouldn't copy anyone, but rather absorb what attracts us in each sound. I have many influences, but Eric Johnson is, without a doubt, the most obvious.
