🇬🇧 Pat Metheny performing Cinema Paradiso with Charlie Haden – a touching and intimate live version, now available with precise notation, tablature and a real-time cursor. Pat plays on a nylon-string guitar, revealing his unique approach and phrasing.
🎸 For detail-oriented players:
1. This video highlights Metheny’s characteristic horizontal playing and fluid use of the little finger across the neck (notably around bars 39 at 2:20 and 75 at 3:55).
2. Observe also his left-hand thumb occasionally reaching over the neck – sometimes even fretting the 5th string (see bar 47 at 2:41)!
3. Notes played with the right-hand thumb are usually written with downward stems, but for rhythmic clarity, they may appear with upward stems marked “p” underneath.
4. The chord diagrams show left-hand positions and shapes for visualization purposes – not intended for strumming.
5. Chord names prioritize harmonic movement over literal voicing, in order to reflect Pat’s harmonic intent throughout the progression.
6. As Pat himself mentioned in one of his private lessons, he likes to play with time — sometimes slightly ahead or behind the beat — which makes transcription particularly tricky. I had to make rhythmic choices that best capture the musical feel rather than strict alignment to the metronome.

🎸 Pour les guitaristes attentifs :
1. Cette vidéo met en évidence le jeu horizontal caractéristique de Metheny et sa grande aisance avec le petit doigt, notamment aux mesures 39 (2:20) et 75 (3:55).
2. On observe aussi son pouce main gauche qui passe au-dessus du manche – parfois même pour jouer la 5e corde (mesure 47 à 2:41) !
3. Les notes jouées avec le pouce droit sont généralement notées avec des hampes vers le bas, mais pour simplifier certaines lectures rythmiques, elles peuvent apparaître vers le haut avec l’indication “p” en dessous.
4. Les diagrammes d’accords indiquent les positions à visualiser pour la main gauche ; ce ne sont pas des accords destinés à être grattés.
5. Les noms d’accords reflètent avant tout le mouvement harmonique perçu, afin de traduire la logique et l’intention de Pat sur cette grille.
6. Comme Pat le mentionne dans une de ses leçons privées, il aime jouer avec le temps, parfois légèrement en avant ou en arrière, ce qui rend la transcription parfois difficile. J’ai dû faire des choix rythmiques en essayant de restituer au mieux le ressenti musical.
