Jennifer Finch’s fellow musicians have rallied around the L7 bass guitarist as a GoFundMe campaign for her medical care has surpassed $350,000, with donations from Garbage, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament, Tool’s Maynard James Keenan, Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna, and other prominent rock figures.
The organizer behind the fundraiser says they have been “blown away” by the support after Finch, 59, revealed she would miss L7’s forthcoming tour following multiple surgeries and setbacks from an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Finch’s friend Aubree Miller launched the GoFundMe campaign after the illness left the bassist requiring extensive at-home medical care. L7 explained that the funds raised would “allow her to remain safely at home with the care, dignity, and support she needs.” In a message on the fundraising page, Miller acknowledged that Finch has “more good days behind her than ahead.”
The announcement of Finch’s condition on L7’s Instagram page prompted an outpouring of support for the musician, who co-founded the influential Los Angeles punk band in 1985. The fundraiser has now more than doubled its original $150,000 goal, thanks in part to a number of high-profile donations.
’90s rockers Garbage contributed $8,000 to the campaign, while Green Day guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong donated $5,000 and Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament gave $4,500.
Other artists showing their support include Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan ($2,500), Bikini Kill vocalist and riot grrrl pioneer Kathleen Hanna ($5,000), Korn guitarist Brian “Head” Welch ($1,000), and Fugazi guitarist Guy Picciotto ($1,000).
Bad Religion guitarist and Epitaph Records founder Brett Gurewitz, along with his wife, donated $10,000, while an anonymous donor made the largest single contribution so far, giving $40,000.
At the time of writing, the fundraiser has raised more than $365,000 from nearly 5,000 donations.
In an update posted to the page, Miller expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming response.
“We are absolutely blown away by the support, love, and how far this campaign went yesterday. We are all so grateful for the community showing up far and wide to support Jennifer.”
Miller added that one comment on the fundraiser read, “You have an army behind you,” and said the message resonated deeply with Finch.
“When that comment came in, I immediately read it to Jennifer, and it touched her so much,” Miller wrote.
Miller also shared a personal story about a time when Finch came to her aid during a medical emergency, adding: “This time, Jennifer is the one who needs us.”
According to the update, the money raised so far will cover eight weeks of “supplemental in-home medical care costs.” Miller also thanked L7 and Courtney Love, saying the campaign “wouldn’t have been possible” without their support.
Despite Finch’s absence, L7 will continue with their farewell tour plans at the bassist’s request. The band has recruited Tsuzumi Okai, who has performed with Limp Bizkit and Kim Dracula, to fill in during Finch’s recovery.
