Suzanne Vega never imagined “Luka” would become one of the defining songs of the late 1980s. She also never thought that, decades later, she’d reveal just how personal it really was.

Vega wrote the song in 1984 as the story of an abused child told in the first person. But when her manager suggested it could become a hit, Vega couldn’t see it.

“It’s a small song about an abused boy,” she tells Guitar Player today. “I didn’t really see it hitting the charts or anything. But he argued with me and said he thought that it had an important message.”

That conviction set in motion a lengthy studio process that transformed Vega’s sparse acoustic composition into the polished recording that reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1987.
