Robert Plant made a surprise appearance at a youth chess tournament in England on August 1 — and walked away with a loss to a 17-year-old local player.
The Led Zeppelin singer quietly attended the mayor’s junior charity tournament in Bewdley, Worcestershire, where he sat down for a game against George Walker. The local teenager ultimately won by resignation after Plant had to leave before the match could be completed.
Walker, a Led Zeppelin fan, told the BBC he didn’t recognize Plant when they first began playing — and was stunned when he realized who his opponent was.

“He’s one of my favorite music artists,” Walker said. “My mum and sister like him as well. The odds are tiny; I didn’t even know he was in the area at the time.”
Despite the unusual circumstances, Walker said Plant was a gracious opponent.
“He was really decent,” Walker said. “I won by resignation because he had to quickly go, but it was a good game.”

Kidderminster Chess Club chairman John Wrench said Plant’s appearance was kept quiet ahead of the event.
“We were really delighted to have him along, and it adds a bit of prestige to the event,” Wrench said. “We couldn’t publicize the fact that he was going to be there, but we were aware there was a strong chance he was gonna show.”
Wrench added that some of the young competitors didn’t immediately recognize the rock legend in their midst.
“Some of the youngsters — remember this was an under-18 chess tournament — they thought, ‘Robert who?’” he said. “It seems strange to people of a certain generation; but once you make them aware that he’s a rock legend, I think they get it.”
As for Plant’s chess skills, Wrench offered a measured assessment: “I think he has the potential to be good, with a bit of practice.”
