Why Dolly Parton was the magic connection for Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris

Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton didn’t set out to form a supergroup. It was just by luck that they discovered the extraordinary sound that happened when they put their voices together.

The proof came in 1987, when Trio turned that discovery into one of the biggest country albums of its era. It spent five weeks at number one on Billboard’s country chart, reached number six on the Billboard 200, won a Grammy and eventually sold millions of copies.

But the three singers had heard the magic more than a decade earlier. Soon after Ronstadt and Harris became friends in the early 1970s, they discovered they had a shared obsession.
