Tony Iommi accidentally set Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward on fire

Tony Iommi recalled how a stunt staged to surprise Black Sabbath’s new producer went dangerously wrong, leaving Bill Ward with serious burns. It wasn’t the first time the guitarist had set fire to the drummer — but it certainly was the last.

The incident took place as the band worked on their 1980 album, Heaven and Hell. It was their first record to feature Ronnie James Dio, and the band also had a new producer, Martin Birch.
