You’d be more likely to see a mosh pit at a Dave Matthews concert than a list of all-time greatest bassists that didn’t include Paul McCartney. With all the recognition McCartney gets for his bass chops – not to mention his songwriting genius – it’s easy to forget that he started his journey with the Beatles as a guitarist.

Only when Stu Sutcliffe stepped down as the band’s bassist in 1961 did the 19-year-old, baby-faced Paul reluctantly trade six strings for four.
