“He stopped me in the middle of the song and asked me what it was. I said, ‘Nothing.’ He said, ‘You have to finish that.’ So I finished the song that Saturday night in an hour”: How Vanessa Carlton created her classic hit A Thousand Miles

“He stopped me in the middle of the song and asked me what it was. I said, ‘Nothing.’ He said, ‘You have to finish that.’ So I finished the song that Saturday night in an hour”: How Vanessa Carlton created her classic hit A Thousand Miles

A Thousand Miles is the 2002 debut single that kick-started pop singer Vanessa Carlton’s career in music – but it might have been a different story if she had stuck with her original title for the song.

Carlton wrote the main piano riff as 17 year-old in her parent’s sunroom four years prior to its release and was told by her music teacher mother that it had all the makings of “a hit song”. However, at this stage it was only partially complete and a period of creative uncertainty led to her leaving it unfinished for half a year.
