“I got the impression that Gary didn’t want to move from a safe place – he wanted to do stuff the way he’d always done it”: Art rock guitarist and producer Bill Nelson reflects on trying to push Gary Numan out of his comfort zone

“I got the impression that Gary didn’t want to move from a safe place – he wanted to do stuff the way he’d always done it”: Art rock guitarist and producer Bill Nelson reflects on trying to push Gary Numan out of his comfort zone

Born in Wakefield, Bill Nelson studied at the town’s art college before recording his first album, Northern Dream, in Mike Levon’s bedroom studio in 1971. Much to his astonishment, legendary DJ John Peel played it in its entirety, before Nelson formed Be-Bop Deluxe and forged a reputation as one of art rock’s most exemplary – if under-appreciated – guitarists.

Nelson’s kit has always leaned towards the experimental, using a Minimoog, an ARP Omni and an EBow on his stylish 1983 LP Chimera, collaborating alongside YMO’s Yukihiro Takahashi, Kate Bush drummer Preston Heyman, and Japan bassist Mick Karn.
