The Gibson Custom Eric Clapton 1958 Les Paul Custom is a faithful replica of the guitar the legendary musician used in the waning days of the ’60s into the ’70s. Handcrafted by the Gibson Custom Shop and featuring Murphy Lab aging techniques, the three-pickup “Black Beauty” recalls the sweet, gritty tones Clapton showcased on parts of Cream’s Disraeli Gears (1967), as well as on the road with Delaney & Bonnie. Outfitted with three unpotted Custombucker pickups, paper-in-oil capacitors and CTS 500k audio-taper potentiometers, this limited-edition reproduction oozes vintage sound. This is also an instrument with a dual guitar hero pedigree, as Clapton gifted the original 1958 Custom to Albert Lee when Lee joined his band in 1979—which the Eric Clapton 1958 Les Paul Custom commemorates with an extra pickguard hand signed by both players.
“This neck is pretty remarkable,” says Los Angeles guitarist Angela Petrilli, as she demos the Gibson Custom Eric Clapton 1958 Les Paul Custom. “It really feels like a 60-year-old instrument—like someone has played it, loved it and used it on the road. The neck actually feels like it has been sweat on in hot venues and tiny blues clubs. In addition, the three unique pickups can get you sounds that are very mellow and buttery that sit right in the pocket, or something that bites and cuts through a mix. This guitar has unbelievable mojo.”
