“We were all very serious – guitar battles and everything…” Interviewed in late 1976, just prior to their split, The Band’s Robbie Robertson and Rick Danko look back

In November 1976, The Band played what would be their last ever gig with Robbie Robertson, captured on Martin Scorsese’s concert movie The Last Waltz. Robertson was convinced that being on the road wasn’t good for a musician’s health and wanted to become more of a studio proposition.

This interview was published in our end-of-year issue, but took place some time before, and Robertson is non-committal about the pleasures of being on the road and performing. “I enjoy it if I don’t do it too much,” he says, “or when I feel special about it – if I’m not doing it because I have to. If the timing is right, and you haven’t done it for a while, then it’s nice, it’s very exciting.” By the time his words were printed, The Band had all but ceased to exist.
