John McLaughlin’s SECRET Outside Guitar Patterns

John McLaughlin

In this jazz fusion guitar lesson, I break down two John McLaughlin improvisational patterns that give you that signature outside / altered sound over dominant chords. The first pattern is a simple fingering shape that moves across strings, creating unexpected tension and release. The second uses triads moving in tritones, producing a powerful diminished sound that McLaughlin often draws on in his solos.

I’ll show you exactly how these patterns interact with dominant 7th chords, why they work, and give you additional examples so you can start applying them to your own improvisation right away. If you’ve ever wanted to sound more adventurous, play outside like John McLaughlin, and expand your altered dominant vocabulary, this lesson is for you!
