American progressive metal band Symphony X (from New Jersey) opened their set on the CRUISE TO THE EDGE (abbreviated to CTTE in the title line) 2024 performing Iconoclast and Nevermore. Both songs pick up on the theme that “machines are taking over everything (predicting AI?) and will lead to our demise” (from an interview with lead singer Russell Allen) and feature the incredible vocals of Russell and the guitar shredding of Michael Romeo, in the Stardust Theater on the Norwegian Cruise Line cruiseship Norwegian Pearl on March 8, 2024. Iconoclast was written by Russell Allen and Michael Romeo and was the title and opening track on Symphony X’s eighth studio album released in June 2011. Nevermore was written by Michael Romeo and Michael LePond and was the second track and lead single from Underworld, Symphony X’s ninth studio album released in July 2015. Both albums are concept albums considering the potential bleakness of the future. Iconoclast debuted at number 7 on the Top Hard Rock chart and number 19 on the Top Rock albums chart, while Underworld peaked at number 6 on the Top Hard Rock albums chart, number 89 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart and charted all over the world in the top 60 in 12 countries.
