Steve Lukather tells the audience that the next song has been misunderstood since it was written and tells the tongue-in-cheek secret (?) after which Toto performs 99, featuring Steve on lead vocal, Dennis taking a keyboard solo and John Pierce performing a bass solo at the Hard Rock Live in Orlando, Florida on March 1, 2026. 99 was written by David Paich and was the third track and lead single from Hydra, Toto’s second studio album released in October 1979. Hydra peaked at number 4 on the US Billboard 200 Albums chart, although it did not match the commercial success of their eponymous debut album. 99 was written as a tribute to George Lucas’ film THX 1138, and peaked at number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 17 on the Canada Top Singles charts.
