Georgy Porgy was written by David Paich and was the third track and third single from Toto’s eponymous debut studio album released in October 1978. Toto’s self-titled debut album was a success, peaked at number 9 on the US Billboard 200, number 37 on the UK Albums, number 9 in Canada and number 2 on the Australian Albums chart. Georgy Porgy peaked at number 48 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Single chart and number 18 on the Billboard Hot R & B Songs chart. Eric Benét’s cover met with more success than the original, charting in the top 40.
