Yngwie Malmsteen and Kirk Hammett story

it’s well known that during guitar world’s blindfold test in 1994 Yngwie Malmsteen prays Metallica but criticized their league guitars Kirk Hammett saying that he’s not a very good guitarist while ingvay admitted that Kirk can play fast and very good at it he said that Kirk’s choice of notes and sense of pitch are very bad engve also added that he thinks that Kirk neither plays with musicality nor in tune he’s got no taste whatsoever ingvey included that’s pretty harsh in the same interview ingbe slams Kirk’s teacher Joe Satriani as well after they play Joe satriani’s the mighty turtle head in they said the soul Wing going over the song is very bad it’s been out of shape and Out Of Tune it’s very basic pentatonic runs the choice of notes in the solo is completely overdone that stuff has been done for 30 years I’m sick and tired of that bending this is the most run-of-the-mill pentatonic plane I ever heard Out Of Tune and terrible Yngwie concluded so that was engvay Malmsteen commenting on Kirk and sash playing during guitar world’s blindfold test in 1994. not many people actually know that Kirk had one of Yngwie malmsteen’s early demo tapes and brought it to Joe Satriani in 1981 probably in 1982. in fact malmsteen’s demos first surfaced on College radio stations in Northern California in the early 80s in March 2020 Kirk Hammett in a q a session at the Columbia Arts Academy confessed that the second lesson he had with Joe Satriani he brought him one of Yngwie malmsteen’s early demo tapes to break down Yngwie Style this is what Kurt revealed the second lesson I brought him Joe Satriani this demo tape from this band from Sweden called Rising force and the guitar player on the tape was a 18 year old Swedish guy named ingvay malmstein and I played for Joe and he was like Wow and I Heard a Voice on the other room screaming that tape is speeded up and Joe said nope that guy is picking every note and it’s in real time and it’s not speeded up otherwise the pitch would be affected and we kind of dissected in Bay style but then ingvay started recording and making all these albums and I didn’t want to turn out like some clone of someone else and so I purposely just kind of stopped looking into aspects of his style So eventually the two Kirk and ingbe met at the day on the green show in August 1985. great rock bands played that day including scorpions rat ymt Metallica Rising force and Victory that was the day when Metallica went to the next level in front of their Hometown crowd and then they took off becoming one of the most influential bands of rock music history and engvay’s band never had such huge success some people who were there at the 1985’s day on the green show remember that they came for Rising fours but were blown away by Metallica’s performance no wonder because Metallica was something new and fresh while engvay’s band has always been kind of an updated speeded up version of Richie Blackmore’s rainbow so let’s take a closer look at ingvey’s commentary on Metallica and 1994’s Guitar World interview so they played him a live version of Metallica’s Master of Puppets apparently liveshit binge and Purge Seattle 1989 and this is what engvay said that’s Metallica I love it this is maybe the second or third time I’ve heard this song and the first time I’ve heard the live version my old drummer and keyboardist liked Metallica a lot and they played this song around the time I was recording Odyssey in 1988. I liked it then and I like it now isn’t it weird Malmsteen recognizes the band immediately although it is his second time hearing the song and he says oh that’s Metallica I love it ingvey continues of all the bands that play this type of music Metallica is the best James Hetfield sings better than all the other vocalists and Lars Ulrich and malmstream’s actual first name is Lars as well is a great drummer I feel some sort of connection with them I think the band heard some of my early demos which sounded something like this I’m not saying I influenced them but maybe I did overall the band has a great sound but I think the lead guitar player Kirk Hammett is not very good he can play fast and is pretty good at it but his choice of notes and sense of pitch are very bad I don’t think that he plays with musicality or plays in tune rather than lifting the song his solo seemed to be an anti-climax but we have to keep in mind that Guitar World played inve a live version of Master of Puppets James Hetfield does play a sloppy uh solo did Inge know that it was James playing that solo and then Kirk plays his solo and fails to reproduce those insane natural harmonics and probably misses a few Notes too well we have to admit that after playing those rhythm guitar parts at such a crazy Tempo no wonder they played a bit sloppy on those solos and missed a few notes it’s a human factor so what was it jealousy yes technically Kirk is not near ingvay’s level but he was a perfect fit for Metallica Kirk solos are well constructed with many excellent ideas in them exotic notes and scales plus Kirk’s sense of rhythm and Kirk Solo’s Rock while engvay can be born to death repeating the same harmonic minor licks and diminished arpeggios if ingve had been in Metallica he would have ruined all their songs well ingvay could play a cover of Master of Puppets and show what his solo would sound like so looks like ingvay sounds a bit jealous Metallica became so huge and influential why ingvey’s own band took off for a while in the 80s but soon become outdated and went downhill when Grudge and alternative rock took off in the 90s and just for information Kirk hammett’s net worth is 200 million dollars versus ingvey’s net worth is like 5 million or maybe 15 million doesn’t make any difference Kirk is way more successful financially but let’s go back to Kurt’s commentary on why he didn’t want to play like ingvay he said that he and Joe Satriani dissected Yngwie style but then ingbe started recording and making all these albums and I didn’t want to turn out like some clone of someone else Kirk claimed and so I purposely just kind of stopped looking into the aspects of engvay style well it would be much more decent to tell the truth of course Kirk doesn’t have ing-based skills not wanting to be someone else’s clone is a legit reason but only if you can do it and you choose not to technically Kirk and even Joe Satriani are nowhere near ingvay malmstein’s level so we can translate Kirk’s statement like this oh we listen to ingbase demo tape he blew our minds and I tried to study his techniques but figured out that I can’t play like him so I got mad and stopped trying
