What is it?

When it comes to electric guitars with vintage aesthetics, nothing beats a real nitrocellulose finish. It is what was predominantly used on those coveted Fenders and Gibsons from the ‘50s and ‘60s, and its soft nature means it will happily wear as you clock up the miles. And for those who like a bit of modern relicing, it’s just more convincing on a nitro finish compared to the now much more prevalent polyurethane. The thing is, it nearly always comes with a higher price tag. Patina is looking to change that.

Brought to us from the same folks behind the bang-for-buck success story that is Jet, the concept behind Patina is that of affordable guitars with real nitrocellulose finishes. This sets the company apart from other budget brands that usually utilize the cheaper and more durable polyurethane.

To be clear, plenty of higher-end guitars use a poly finish too (for example, Fender’s American Professional range), as there are advantages to this finish – mostly that aforementioned durability – so we are in the land of preference here. The main point is that for those who like a classic look and a guitar that will wear, the softer nitro is the better choice.
