“He is like the Shakespeare of rock ‘n’ roll isn’t he?”: His Lordship’s James Walbourne on the importance of Chuck Berry, and being a Pretender for 18 years

If Chuck Berry was still alive, he’d have celebrated his 100th birthday on October 18 this year. Sadly, the pioneering guitar legend and father of rock ‘n’ roll died in March 2017, aged 90, but his incredible legacy lives on.

Berry created the blueprint for modern rock music, and was a huge influence on The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen – all those young aspiring musicians who first picked up guitars in the mid-to-late ’50s and early ‘60s were in awe of him. In fact, John Lennon once famously said, “If you tried to give rock ‘n’ roll another name, you might call it Chuck Berry.”
