Nearly a decade after Tom Petty’s death, the Heartbreakers reunite

Mike Campbell has spent nearly his entire musical life at the center of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. From the band’s formation in the mid-’70s through Petty’s death in 2017, Campbell was Petty’s closest musical collaborator, co-writing songs including “Refugee,” “Here Comes My Girl,” “You Got Lucky” and “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” while creating the guitar parts that helped define “American Girl,” “Breakdown” and countless other Heartbreakers classics.

Now, nearly a decade after Petty’s death, Campbell and his surviving original bandmates have returned to the stage together. Campbell, keyboardist Benmont Tench, drummer Stan Lynch and bass guitarist Ron Blair reunited as the Heartbreakers at the 2026 Americana Honors & Awards in Nashville on September 16, performing with Chris Stapleton.

It was the first time the four surviving original members had played together as the Heartbreakers since Petty’s death in 2017. The band performed “American Girl” and “Breakdown,” while later Heartbreakers Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston joined them for “You Wreck Me.”

The sight of the band back together is a reminder of their strength as a unit. Although Blair quit in 1982, he rejoined 20 years later. Lynch left in 1994, but returned for the group’s 2002 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and remained in touch with his bandmates.
