Ozzy Osbourne on his writing dynamic with Randy Rhoads
The Ozzy Osbourne–Randy Rhoads dynamic duo is the stuff of legends. After Ozzy was ejected from Black Sabbath, his quest to launch a solo career brought together British veterans Bob Daisley, Rainbow’s ex-bassist, and former Uriah Heep drummer, Lee Kerslake.
At the same time, a certain Randy Rhoads, from LA’s Quiet Riot, was tired of the internal turmoil within his band, and their seemingly never-ending chase for a US record deal. In October ’79, after he heard that the former Sabbath frontman was auditioning guitar players, he somehow found himself in the Ozzy circus.
“Even though I was fucked up on cocaine and booze, I remember when I first met Randy Rhoads,” Osbourne told Guitar World in 2002.

“I was staying at a hotel called Le Parc on West Knoll off Santa Monica Boulevard [in West Hollywood]. I used to live like an animal then. And Dana Strum from Slaughter says to me, ‘I’ve got this fucking amazing guitar player for you.’

“And I go, ‘Yeah, sure.’ ’Cause at the time, everybody was a fucking Hendrix clone. So it was one in the morning, and I was fucking smashed. Off the wall. And this little guy comes in. He looked like a fucking doll. But even in my stupor, I realized he was great as soon as he started playing the guitar.”
Osbourne fondly recalled working with Rhoads on Goodbye to Romance – the 1980 ballad influenced by the chord progressions of Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D.
As this song demonstrates, Rhoads drew heavily on his rigorous classical training, favoring European classical modes over pentatonic scales while placing a premium on virtuosity.

“I was a drunken, drugged-out, fucked-up slob,” Ozzy continued. “But Randy was patient with me.”
“Randy said, ‘Maybe if you tried it in this key…’ He worked with me. He had the patience because he was a guitar teacher. And he gave me a lot of confidence. He wouldn’t intimidate me. Because, believe it or not, I’m quite easily intimidated.”
As for the rest of the album, Ozzy confirmed that “it was a writing team,” with Rhoads crafting the riffs, Bob Daisley writing the lyrics, and the Prince of Darkness coming up with vocal melodies. Through their collaboration, the triumvirate created a timeless record that marked a move away from Sabbath’s heavy metal sound.
Another nod to classical music comes by way of Dee, included in the Blizzard album tracklist – an homage to Rhoads’ mother.
“Randy absolutely adored his mother,” Ozzy said. “And one day Randy came to me and said, ‘Do you mind if I do this classical guitar piece for my mum?’ And I said, ‘Fuck, what yer askin’ me for? Go ahead.’”
The band’s hard work paid off, with singles Crazy Train and Mr. Crowley hitting both the US and UK charts. Most importantly, it solidified Ozzy as a bona fide solo act who could stand on his own – with a little help from Rhoads.
