Hey everyone! Here’s the next episode of Brewster’s Millions Of Rants with Nuno Bettencourt’s Secret Delay Tricks. I’ve had the idea behind this lesson on the backburner for a few years, and while I put together a “Secret Delay Tricks” rant/lesson last year surrounding Pat Thrall, now it’s Nuno’s turn (finally) – so let’s dive in!
This lesson revolves around some live footage I spotted of Extreme during their early days, when they were playing clubs around Boston in the mid-1980s. One video in particular featured a guitar solo from Nuno in 1986, where he was using delay the entire time, and played a series of classical-sounding melodies and ideas while using a long delay setting. He also harmonized parts with himself while using delay – a trick he learned from the legendary Brian May – and much more!
I’ve also added the final tapped lick from Nuno’s ‘Flight Of The Wounded Bumblebee’ solo that uses a slapback delay effect, while cruising through tapped major arpeggios that ascend using tritones (a.k.a. b5’s). If you’ve ever heard Nuno’s famous solo, you’ll know exactly which tapped lick is featured here, and it’s pretty easy to find, as it’s the last lick of the solo.
Anyway, if you’re a fan of Nuno Bettencourt, a player looking for some new ideas while using delay effects, a guitarist looking for some slick licks to add to their bag of tricks, or maybe you’re just curious what all the fuss isa bout – this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons – THANK YOU!
